Hiro looks like a regular teenage boy, in a teenager's sloppy wardrobe and a teenager's messy haircut. Out of his element, he might be a little shy, reticent, awkward and unsure of himself, just like any kid. In his element, though, Hiro's a hyperactive whiz kid - fast-talking, intelligent, bouncing all over and communicating with his hands as much as his mouth.

The most important thing to remember about Hiro is that, while he's a genius who can outdo a lot of grown men in the IQ department, emotionally he's still just a kid, with all the confusion and reckless mistakes and crazy mood swings that come with being a kid. He looks like a regular teenager because he is a regular teenager, regardless of how smart he is.

In short words, Hiro is a young robotics prodigy. He graduated high school when he was thirteen. And yeah, that's amazing, but a teenager with a high school diploma is still a teenager, and one year later the most he's accomplished is joining in illegal robot fighting rings in run-down alleys and maybe getting arrested once or twice.

Hiro lives with his Aunt Cass and his older brother Tadashi, who encourages him to use his amazing intellect to do more than smash angry metal robots against each other. But Hiro thrives on challenge, and it's not until a professor at San Fransokyo Tech, where Tadashi studies robotics, challenges him to push the limits of his abilities that Hiro is inspired to try and apply to the college himself. To do this, he gets the help of his brother's friends to create tiny, magnetic microbots controlled by neurotransmission and enter the school's tech fair.

Unfortunately, tragedy happens and the microbots are stolen by a masked man with his own plans. Hiro has to push his intellect further than ever before to transform his new friends and his brother's healthcare robot, Baymax, into a crime-fighting team to stop the masked man from destroying San Fransokyo.
